Stan Kenton - Artistry in Rhythm download

This will never be replicated. Today, this music is not appreciated by the mainstream. Only a few holdouts, like us.

Heard the band live  probably 20 times between 1957 and  1978. His music had a profound effect on me to this day.

My youth was shaped by Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, Stan Kenton and Traditional Jazz, the British kind. What glorious memories.

Great music not to be found in these days.What a Pity

One of my all time favorite bands ever.  Saw the band many times at the Palais Royale in Toronto.  With John Von Ohlen the band had lots of heat and Stan loved those large brassy cymbals..will never forget those specials concerts on the shores of Lake Ontario.

I first heard this band when I was fifteen years old. Those emotions I felt changed me forever. I grew-up so fast that life began to become a far more powerful experience. No woman ever patronized me ever after.

The base player must have worn his fingers out. Wow. Terrific group-terrific leader . RIP S.K.

I saw THIS band in 1971 as a college freshman. It was a jazz seminar at Indianola College featuring only the Kenton band. Stan introduced Willie Maiden who would give a short talk. Willie shuffled to the microphone..... paused....... paused some more....... and finally spoke one word.... "TIME." Of course, he explained how important it was. I thought it was quite profound and remember it as though it were yesterday! Later, I spotted their bass player eating dinner alone, so I asked him if I could join him. He told me that he had been driving a bus in Denver, when he got a call to play with Stan. That really surprised me! I was a trumpet player and sometimes used the Mike Vax mouthpiece. I saw Stan Kenton every time he came to Youngstown,OH. Sat with him at a bar in Hubbard , OH and his guys had a jam session.

You really have to have heard this band live to appreciate it. Like at the Blue Note in Chicago in 1957.
