With the exception of "This land is your land": This is better than anything that Daddy wrote!

A friend and I rode this train from Chicago to Carbondale in 1969. This song sure brings back memories.

I think of lots of things when I hear this. One of the greatest images is of my roommate and I sitting in a bar in the French Quarter hearing this and watching one of the most beautiful women I ever saw singing along behind the bar. After a tour in Vietnam it was simply heaven to me.

My papa passed this past January. I am in my early teens, he was in his early 70’s. He was in a bluegrass band, he’d play a couple times a week with his bandmates he’s known for over 20 years. At his celebration of life, his bandmates played his 3 favourite songs to play and sing. This song, house of the rising sun, and the 455 rocket were played. I’ve only heard house of the rising sun before then, and I heard the other two for the first time then. I wish I got to hear him sing to this song. He was a great singer every time I heard him, but I never got to hear him sing his old classic. But every time I hear this song for the rest of my life I’ll always think of you, papa. Love you always.

I just learned what the lyric “the passengers will please refrain” meant. When the train was coming into town, the toilets were closed and the passengers were asked (told) not to use them until the train was back on track, when they could flush the toilets on the tracks at will when the train was back up to speed. Yuk? Another time!
